Wet Bubble (Mycogone)
ContaminantsAct now
Distorted, swollen or lumpy mushrooms that stop developing normally; severity ranges from a few misshapen mushrooms to loss of the whole crop. Caused by the fungus Mycogone perniciosa growing on the mushrooms.
Likely causes
- Infection by Mycogone perniciosa, usually through the casing layer
- Poor hygiene between crops
- Contaminated casing material, tools or air
What to do
Remove affected mushrooms immediately, bag them without shaking and discard. Do not water over infected areas. If it keeps returning, stop the crop, clean the room and use fresh casing material.

Mycogone perniciosa causes wet bubble disease; yield losses of about 15–30% in China, and rapid epidemics or severe infections can lead to total mushroom loss; the disease shows a wide range of symptom severity; yellow to brown isolates were more virulent than white ones; control relies on cultural practices and fungicides, with resistance developing.
