Viral Disease (oyster mushroom viruses)
ContaminantsAct now
Fruiting that starts late or not at all on a whole bed, short stems, abnormal shapes and thin caps; the mycelium may grow slowly and thinly.
Likely causes
- Infected spawn or culture carrying virus particles
- Spread from earlier infected crops (the way it spreads in oysters is not yet known)
What to do
There is no cure. Discard the affected bags or beds, clean and disinfect the growing room thoroughly and restart with spawn from a virus-free strain.

- Mushroom Growers' Handbook 1: Oyster Mushroom Cultivation, chapter 8 'Viral disease' (MushWorld (2004)). Two isometric viruses, OMIV-I and OMIV-II (oyster mushroom isometric viruses), about 30 nm across, were isolated from oysters showing symptoms; symptoms are similar to La France disease of button mushrooms: delayed fruiting, shortened stipes, abnormal shapes and thin caps, and some infected beds form no fruiting bodies at all; infected hyphae grow slowly on agar with low density; viral diseases cannot be cured by any cultural or chemical treatment and prevention is the only control: use healthy, virus-free spawn and clean and disinfect rooms where it occurred; viral disease is not well documented but occurs sporadically and causes huge losses on some farms.
