- Mushroom Growers' Handbook 2: Shiitake Cultivation (MushWorld, 2005; Spanish edition by CERZOS), chapter 5 'Slugs and snails' (MushWorld). Slugs and snails are among the most serious pests of log-grown shiitake because they feed directly on the caps; they are active at night and on cloudy or misty days and hide in damp places; control combines removing daytime refuges such as plant debris, weeds and stones, trapping, regular hand collection with a torch at night into soapy water, keeping the soil surface dry and using bait.
