Over-Pinning (many pins, few mushrooms)
Growing conditionsLow urgency
Hundreds of tiny pins cover the surface but only a few grow into proper mushrooms and the rest stall or die.
Likely causes
- Primordia formation period too long or conditions held too wet and cool
- Lack of oxygen or too little light
- Substrate nutrition too low to feed all the pins
- A strain that over-pins
- Spawn rate too dilute
What to do
Shorten the primordia stage by moving to the fruiting conditions sooner, raise fresh air and light to the species' range, and consider a richer substrate, a higher spawn rate or a different strain.

Sources
- Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms (Paul Stamets, 3rd ed., Ten Speed Press), chapter 25 'Cultivation problems and their solutions: a trouble-shooting guide' (Ten Speed Press). Massive numbers of mushrooms that form with few developing ('over-pinning') are attributed to a poor strain, lack of oxygen, inadequate light, inadequate substrate nutrition or a dilute spawning rate; remedies are to increase air exchange, adjust light to the right wavelength, shorten the primordia formation period, adjust to the species' growth parameters, reformulate the substrate, increase the spawn rate or obtain a better strain.
