Mushroom Growing

Profit & Cost Calculator

Work out the real economics of a mushroom grow — cost per block, break-even price per kilogram, margin and return on investment — from your own supplier and market prices.

You enter every cost and your sale price; the calculator does the breakdown, not the pricing. Yield comes from the species' biological-efficiency range, so the numbers rest on a realistic harvest. It flags your biggest cost, warns when you're selling below cost, and shows what the batch turns at the low end of yield — the honest case, not the headline.

This tool does no pricing for you — it only arranges the numbers you give it. Yields use the species BE band (literature-range); at the low end your margin is thinner than the headline. Not financial advice.

How to use it

  1. Pick your species. Its yield range drives the harvest the economics are built on; set the BE assumption conservatively.
  2. Enter your costs per block. Substrate, spawn and consumables for one block or bag — these are placeholders to replace with your real figures.
  3. Add batch overhead and labour. Energy, sterilizing, rent share, and your own hours at a rate.
  4. Enter your sale price. Read profit, margin, ROI, break-even price per kilogram, and the biggest lever to cut.

Questions

What is break-even price per kilogram?

The price at which profit is zero — total cost divided by total yield. Every kilogram sold above it is profit; below it, you're losing money.

How should I price my mushrooms?

This isn't pricing advice — the calculator only arranges your numbers. Your break-even is the floor; local wholesale and retail rates, and whether you sell fresh or dried, set the ceiling.

What is a good margin for mushroom farming?

It varies widely and margins are often thin. Whatever it is, it assumes you sell everything fresh at full price — and it isn't real profit until your own labour is counted.

Why does it need my own prices?

Costs and market rates differ everywhere. The tool does no pricing for you; the result is only as honest as the inputs.
